WEEK 13                                               20 APRIL 2012

TITLE: Presentation is over, ALHAMDULILAH

OBJECTIVE: Improve project

CONTENT/PROCEDURE:

The scariest day of this semester was end.Alhamdulilah, all praise to ALLAH, I satisfied with my presentation except for some small matters. Both of my accessor give their comment and suggestion regarding my project. One of the comment is to replace the step down transformer with other devices as step down transformer normally use for AC voltage.

RESULT/ANALYSIS:

This is my full slides presentation :

CONCLUSION:
 Marks has been released, alhamdulilah

WEEK 12                                               20 April 2012

TITLE : Final preparation of FYP 1 presentation

OBJECTIVE: To finalize the information of Auto Feeder for Pet regarding the presentation FYP

CONTENTS/PROCEDURE:

In counting to the presentation day which last for only few days, lots of works need to be settle for the presentation. The most important thing is block diagram and flow chart. For this purpose, I have met few lecturers to discuss my block diagram and flowchart. After having discussion, the block diagram has been finalize as this :

RESULT/ ANALYSIS:

As refer to the block diagram above, the solar energy from the sun will be converted into electrical energy by the solar panel. Then, the solar energy which is in form of electricity will be stored in battery through solar charger. Then, from the battery, the supply is fed into the step down transformer and inverter. Step down transformer is used to lower the input voltage fed into the timer circuit. As for the inverter, it use to convert DC voltage to AC voltage as filter pump use AC voltage. The timer circuit use to generate pulse to trigger the relay and run the motor for every time setting. For this project, the timer is set to operate three time per day. As motor run, it will rotate and drops foods to the pets.

CONCLUSION:

The flowchart process too have some changes with previous. Lots of thanks to all the lecturers that participate in helping me to finalize my block diagram.

WEEK 11                                                                                  7 APRIL 2012

TITLE : Preparation of FYP presentation.

OBJECTIVES: Gaining information regarding the presentation

CONTENTS/ PROCEDURES:

All degree Sem 1 students will be facing their big day which is FYP presentation on 12 APRIL 2012. Lots of preparation are required before the battle began. As for me, I do some research regarding the component involves in my project. Besides, the operation of the project also taken in consideration. As from the briefing, during the presentation, the term like objectives, literature review, problem statement and block diagram of the project must be explain clearly.

RESULT/ ANALYSIS:

For the solar panel, I have decide to use 24V solar panel with 75 Watt power. The solar panel use to charge 24V lead-acid battery. Then using step down transformer, the voltage will be set to fed the timer circuit with 5V supply and 12V supply to the inverter. The inverter then convert 12VDC to 240VAC as the filter use 240VAC. As for the timer, the time for food to drops is set to three times per day. The timer will sent pulse to the counter and triggered the relay. The relay will on the DC motor to drops the food.

CONCLUSION:

The project is upgrade with speaker with food drops sound and LDR to sense the lighting as at night the filter will be set to stop running.

WEEK 10                                                                       5 APRIL 2012

TITLE : Solar Charger

OBJECTIVES: Research on Solar Charger

CONTENTS/ PROCEDURES:

Solar charger is used to supply electricity to the devices or to charge the battery. For my project, I need to design a circuit for solar charger to charge the battery that use as a backup for my project. From the info I get, solar chargers can charge lead acid or Ni-Cd battery bank up to 48 V and hundreds of ampere-hours (up to 400 Ah) capacity.

RESULT/ ANALYSIS:

To design a solar charger I need to consider my solar panel and battery used. For this moment, I tend to use 12V solar panel and for the battery, it still under research. But, the higher the Ah value, the longer the battery can last. This is the example of the basic solar charger :

CONCLUSION:

Solar charger may depend on the solar panel and battery used. I need more research on those stuff. After all, solar charger just involve with simple circuit.

WEEK 9                                                                             4 APRIL 2012

TITLE: Solar inverter

OBJECTIVES: Research on Solar Inverter

CONTENTS/ PROCEDURES:

In my project, solar inverter is needed as I use the filter pump which require AC voltage. Solar inverters are devices which convert direct current into alternating current. The inverters receive DC which is generated into the solar panels. They transform this current into AC so that it can be used for domestic electronic devices. As I am still doing my research, I still in the process of getting information for my inverter circuit design.

RESULT/ ANALYSIS:

Basically an inverter consists of an electronic circuit which is connected with the DC power source in most cases power storage batteries. The current flows through the batteries and to inverter and the circuit converts it into alternate current which we can use to run our home appliances. The inverter run the DC into the transformer and the frequent “on” and “off” motion of the inverter makes it look like AC. Here a one sample of basic inverter circuit that I found while doing my research :

CONCLUSION:

As a conclusion, inverter circuit is somehow look complicated to me, but I hope I can find a solution to overcome this problem soon.

WEEK 8                                                                         3rd APRIL 2012

TITLE : Solar Panel

OBJECTIVES: Research of Solar Panel

CONTENTS/ PROCEDURES:

For my project, as mention, it will be use the aid of renewable energy which is Solar energy. I had decide to use 12V solar panel. In order to increase the voltage, the solar panel connection can be connected in series. Let say, I want to use 5V solar panel per unit, if I connect three of it in series, I will end up getting 15V of supply.

series solar panel

RESULT / ANALYSIS:

Solar panel has two major type which is polycrystalline (poly) or a monocrystalline (mono). There are not much different between both of them. But in some cases, mono is more efficient due to high efficiency compare to poly. But poly is less expensive than mono and also poly tend to be better in high temperature than mono. From the datasheet however, there is not much difference in energy output whether to have a polycrystalline (poly) or a monocrystalline (mono) panel. So, as for now, I tend to use poly solar panel for my project.

Poly type solar panel

CONCLUSION:

As a conclusion, Poly solar panel is better option for now as it is less expensive and it is more resistant to the heat effects.
